As a single dad working with a startup, I don’t find myself on too many dates as of late. However, I do remember the thrill of meeting someone new and being attracted, wondering, how can I get a conversation started with her? Of course, the best course is natural conversation intermingled with a statement or two that will let her know that you are interested. Sometimes, it can work even better if you just keep your mouth shut and use body signals or a light touch on the arm to break the personal space barrier. First and foremost, if you cannot make them laugh, you cannot get the date. Long story short, you have to break the ice.
Have you ever tried a one-liner? Has one ever worked for you? Did it really? I don’t believe you. Even when they do work, you have to ask yourself why and if that is really the girl you want to be spending time getting to know. So here we go, here are a couple ice breakers that you can try with the iPhone and some of the crazy and cool applications available. Disclaimer: You must already be able to get a date for any of these suggestions to work..
myAnswers by DoApp
To use our app, first you will need to edit the preset answers. There are a couple directions you can go here. You can input “You, Me - Dinner?” in each answer and approach your prospective date by asking her to do you a favor by testing out this new application you got for your iPhone/iPod Touch. If she laughs and thinks it’s cute, you’re set. Another approach is to use “Yes” for each answer and simply go up to her and have her ask a question, then ask your own question such as, “Should Mary go on a date with me?”
myTo-Dos by DoApp
This idea can be used in conjunction with the first suggestion, or as a stand alone. You will want to add a To-do that says “Take Mary to the Guthrie Theater” or “Take Mary to the Monster Truck Rally” — you know, whatever your pleasure. If you have the date and time that you would like to take her out filled in and she agrees, all you have to do is email it to her. Just make sure she doesn’t give you an address like gojumpin@lake.com.

The screen shot in the app store says it all. “Say, Mary, check out this new application I got for my iPhone.” Whereas, you push the speak button and let the app do the work for you. Hai degli occhi belli. “You have beautiful eyes.” You might consider following this up with, Posso offrirti da bere? “Can I buy you a drink?” I know these are essentially pick-up lines, but the visual is the key.
myLite Flashlight and Color Strobe by DoApp
This is a good way to get a girl’s attention without saying a thing. Turn on the myLite and put it on the red spectrum strobe, and turn the pulse down to 0.5 sec. You need to have a shirt with a breast pocket to do this. Put the iPhone in your shirt pocket and it will look like a red heart beating through your shirt. Simply walk up to the bar and order a drink making sure that she sees the light - so to speak.
Spin by tophervoss
This is pretty self explanatory. It is the old “spin the bottle” game that you stopped playing or never played in elementary school. Let’s just say that you are at a party and she has been liberal with the libations. If you are humorous in your approach, this could just work.
I am not responsible for turn-downs, wrong numbers, or slaps in the face. I can’t say that any of these suggestions are tried and true, but this has sure been pretty fun to write… ![]()

I suspect you are a prodigy at dating, after reading this blog. And here I had always just hoped you’d find a nice Minnesota girl at college or a church picnic. Geez. Does she have to have an iphone? Does she have to be a techy?
