Every new year brings reflection to the previous year and of course predictions for the upcoming 365 days. Who will win the Superbowl? When will Tiger Woods play golf again? When will Jennifer and Brad get back together? What will be the next fashion craze, etc.
For 2010 the technology trend is all focused on mobile and specifically it is being coined “The Year of the Smart Phone”. There is every reason to believe it with the announcements of new smart phones coming from mobile phone manufacturers almost as fast as Paris Hilton goes through boyfriends. Google Android alone added 20 devices, 59 carriers 48 countries, 19 languages in 2009 and another 30+ Android models are coming in 2010. Apple will come out with a new one in 2010 and of course the rumored “video chat” feature always is a topic of anticipated prediction. RIM, Nokia, etc all will crank out their own flavor of new devices with features that do everything from cleaning your bathroom to making you a better dancer.
All of these are changing our view of what a mobile phone is to us because they are less of a phone and more of a device that does everything. It is an extension of us. It’s business and play in one. 2010 is the year where acceptance of this movement hits the main stream because today Google’s announcement of their Nexus One “Superphone” is a change in our thinking.
This release is significant for us as consumers because it dynamically changes the focus on phone purchasing and less of a decision based on the cellular carrier. Google did what every consumer wants; a phone that can run on whatever carrier you choose. The marriage of phone to carrier has been broken and 2010 will in fact be the year of the smart phone.
Tell us what you think. Would you like to see all mobile phones free of the relationship to a certain carrier?
